Discover Oman – from Muscat and Nizwa to Wahiba Sands and Salalah. A journey through landscapes, history and culture on the Arabian Peninsula.

Oman – a land of landscapes and history

In the heart of the Arabian Peninsula lies Oman, a destination that in recent years has attracted more and more travellers looking for something beyond the ordinary. Here, coastline, desert and mountains meet, interwoven with a rich cultural heritage and welcoming encounters. The country offers clear contrasts, from the modern feel of the capital to the traditional life of the countryside.

Muscat – between tradition and modernity

Muscat is often the first stop for those travelling to Oman. The capital stretches along the coast, surrounded by mountains and the Indian Ocean. The city is known for its low-rise buildings, whitewashed facades and carefully preserved architecture. Modern hotels coexist with souks where trade has continued for centuries.

A walk through Mutrah Souk offers insight into daily life, while the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque showcases architecture and craftsmanship of the highest quality. Muscat is also the starting point for further travel around the country, both along the coast and into the mountains.

Nizwa – market, history and mountains

Around two hours from Muscat lies Nizwa, once the capital of Oman. Today, the city is known for its fortress-like castle and its lively Friday market where locals gather to sell goats, dates and handicrafts.

Nizwa also serves as the gateway to Jebel Akhdar, a mountain area that stands out in the landscape. Here, roses, pomegranates and apricots are grown on terraces along the slopes. In spring, the area is filled with the scent of roses during the harvest, while hiking trails and viewpoints attract visitors year-round.

Wahiba Sands – desert landscape and silence

East of Nizwa lies Wahiba Sands. Here, the landscape is shaped by sand dunes that shift with the wind. The area is accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles and offers the opportunity to stay overnight in simple camps or comfortable tented lodges.

Many choose to visit Wahiba Sands to experience the silence and watch the sun set behind the dunes. Daytime tours to Bedouin villages and oases are common, and evenings often end with traditional meals around the fire.

Salalah – coastal town with a tropical touch

In the far south of Oman lies Salalah, a city that differs significantly from the rest of the country. During the monsoon season, between June and September, the area transforms as the rain turns the landscape green.

Salalah is known for its banana plantations and coconut palms, as well as its historical connection to the frankincense trade. Nearby are archaeological sites and stretches of coastline where the Indian Ocean meets cliffs and beaches.

Practical information before travelling to Oman

Oman is a destination that can be visited year-round, but most travellers choose to go between October and April when the temperatures are more comfortable. To explore the country independently, renting a car is an option, especially if you plan to visit mountain and desert areas.

It is also important to check which travel documents and vaccinations are recommended before departure. Trips from Sweden usually include a stopover, although some seasons offer direct flights to Muscat.

A destination for those who want to see more

Oman is a country where distances are relatively short, but the variation is great. From the capital's coastline to high mountains and further into desert landscapes, the journey offers the chance to experience several environments in a short time. History is ever-present, and conversations with locals provide insight into both the past and present Oman.
